Tyler The Creator Biography
Born on March 6, 1991, in Hawthorne, California, Tyler’s upbringing was far from conventional. He is the son of a Nigerian father with Igbo ancestry and an American mother of mixed African-American and white Canadian descent.
Tyler never met his father and spent his early life in Hawthorne before moving to Ladera Heights at the age of 17. Tyler’s love for music was evident from a young age. At just seven years old, he would create imaginary album covers, complete with tracklists and song lengths, before even knowing how to make music.
He taught himself to play the piano at the age of 14, and despite attending 12 different schools during his 12 years of schooling, he never lost his passion for music.
Tyler’s artistic journey began in his teenage years when he would post his creative endeavours on his Myspace page. It was there that he took his stage name, Tyler, the Creator, and co-founded the alternative hip-hop collective, Odd Future, in 2007.
The group self-released their debut mixtape, The Odd Future Tape, in November 2008, which gained them a cult following. Tyler’s first solo mixtape, Bastard, followed in December 2009 and was critically acclaimed, eventually making it onto Pitchfork Media’s list of the Top Albums of 2010.
In February 2011, Tyler released the music video for “Yonkers,” which propelled him into the mainstream spotlight. The video went viral and received attention from several online media outlets, winning Best New Artist for “Yonkers” at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. Tyler’s thematic content in his first two solo projects led fans and publications alike to categorize him in the horrorcore scene, although he vehemently rejected his connection with it.
Tyler’s talent is not limited to music. He co-created and starred in Odd Future’s television show, Loiter Squad, which premiered on Adult Swim in March 2012. The show ran for three seasons and featured guest appearances from celebrities, including Johnny Knoxville, Lil Wayne, and Seth Rogen.
Tyler’s creativity extends to fashion as well. He has his clothing line, Golf Wang, which has become increasingly popular since its launch in 2011. Tyler’s latest clothing venture, Golf le Fleur*, has also been a huge success, with his designs being worn by the likes of A$AP Rocky and Kendall Jenner.
Gregory’s versatility as an artist has been evident in his music. He has released several albums with different themes and styles, from the horrorcore-themed “Goblin” to the jazz-infused “Flower Boy.” His latest album, “Call Me If You Get Lost,” which was released in June 2021, showcases Tyler’s ability to reinvent himself once again. The album has been praised for its storytelling, production, and lyricism, and won Best Rap Album at the 64th Grammy Awards.
