He was raised in a Jewish-American family in Rye, New York.

His father specialized in labor law and was a senior partner at the law firm Proskauer Rose.

After completing his graduation in 1984, he worked as a legislative aide to Les AuCoin until 1985, who at the time had been a member of the U.S. House of Representatives.

He had served as the president and COO of NBA Entertainment.

After completing law school, Adam went on to work as a law clerk for Judge Kimba Wood of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York for a year. Later, he joined the law firm of Cravath, Swaine & Moore as an associate.

Adam began his career with the NBA in 1992 and went on to hold various positions within the league, including becoming chief operating officer and deputy commissioner under his predecessor and mentor David Stern in 2006.

After David Stern announced his retirement Adam preceded him by assuming his post as the 5th commissioner of the NBA on February 1, 2014.

He was ranked No. 1 on its list of the “50 Most Influential People in Sports Business” by Sports Business Journal in 2016. Silver has also been named Time‘s “100 Most Influential People” and one of Fortune‘s “50 Greatest Leaders”.

In 2023, Adam was announced as part of the Board of Trustees of NewYork–Presbyterian Hospital. On the other hand, he is also on the board of the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research.

Adam is part of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
